Seend Cleeve (Sunday 2nd June 2024)

It has been a while since I've seen the Wadworth shire horses, so when I heard they were spending the weekend at the Barge Inn I grabbed the opportunity to check them out. The Wadworth brewery has recently moved lock, stock and beer barrel from Northgate to Folly Road in Devizes, but the shires are still at the old Northgate stables until they move to Seend Cleeve it seems, later in the summer.
I haven't seen either of these two shires before as Wadworth's suspended public appearances during the lockdowns, although they continued local deliveries in the Devizes area.
George is an eight-year old Welsh shire of 18.2 hands who joined them in October 2022, while Walter is only five, 18 hands but growing, and joined them from Driffield in East Yorkshire only last month. They are hard to tell apart but I think Walter is the one wearing a coat. They came over to graze in front of me but the two fences prevented physical contact and they soon wandered off.
Presumably, this weekend was an acclimatisation weekend, and they were in a field next to the Barge Inn (in Extras).
The Kennet and Avon was very busy, as was the canalside beer garden. I reached the towpath by crossing an old footbridge. I liked the mix of lichens and wildflowers on the limestone wall (second Extra, which just lost out as a WFW blip).
