The Front Yard (Thursday 30th May 2024)

The warmer weather and heavy rain has been like rocket fuel to the garden. Where did all that bindweed come from?

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
St Germain - Rose Rouge (1999)
I've been hearing this piece of nu-jazz or acid jazz since 1999 when it has come up on the radio, wondering what role St Germain played in the recording, what is live and what is sampled?
After 25 years I have looked it up. St Germain, it turns out, is a French DJ called Ludovic Navarre. The piece begins with a loop of beautifully played drums and stand-up bass, taken from Dave Brubeck's classic Take Five, which continues throughout the piece, while a sampled voice repeats "I want you to get together". The voice is that of Marlena Shaw singing Woman Of The Ghetto from her Live In Montreaux album.
St Germain is not heard on the record but musicians playing saxophones, trumpet and so on are overlaid live onto the samples both on the record and on St Germain's live appearances. It comes from the album Tourist on the Blue Note label.
