Kunoy

Suður á Nakki (703m) dominates the view north from Klaksvík so, when I first arrived (five weeks ago), I naturally looked at whether it was climbable. However, all routes seemed to be too steep and rocky for me to tackle solo on sight. It's the southernmost peak of Kunoy, an Island that I've never visited, so this became "Plan A" for today. I identified a viewpoint 2/3 of the way up the spur of Suður á Nakki facing Klaksvík as being feasible. In the event, the traverse on steep ground above cliffs was a bit too scary, so I got my view of Klaksvík (see extra) and turned back. However, the way up the broad NE ridge of Suður á Nakki looked feasible since it wasn't so steep, and the crags looked broken. The day was dull, but the view from the summit was still as good as I'd hoped, and I felt very satisfied. Looking from left to right were all four of the local peaks that have enriched my stay: Myrkjanoyrarfjall, (left of the photo), Háfjall and Hálgafelli, and Klakkur.

After picking my way back down between the crags (see extra), I crossed the causeway and was back on Borðoy. The big building is part of Bakkafrost and (at least when it opened in 2018) is the world’s largest hatchery and on-land fish farm. By raising salmon to 0.5kg indoors, they spend much less time in ocean cages, thereby reducing the issue of sea lice that is the scourge of salmon farming. 

Back in the apartment, I refuelled, put on a final load of laundry and watched the Arsenal vs Everton game. Tonight I'll work; tomorrow morning I'll pack.
