I’m in Edinburgh:-)
I got out of the airport bus and into St Andrew’s Square at exactly noon. Stored my bag and went to explore. First I walked west through the new town, which is very old.Georgian I think. Very disappointed that all the lovely looking parks on the map are actually locked and private. Oh well. Then I remembered the Water of Leith walkway and headed for that. Followed it to the Botanics - a quick trip to the cafe for a snack lunch then explored. I especially liked the fruit garden, the herbs, and the Physic garden. Although it was cloudy it was warm enough to sit on a bench and read my book for a while. Back to the Water of Leith and along to the Colonies which were built as cooperative housing in the 1860s I think. Eleven rows of terraced back to back housing, with the most exquisite little gardens, and full of bird song. They’re distinctive because on one side there’s a flight of steps to the front door. I’d be intrigued to know how they’re divided internally. More walking along by the water, then I worked my way back to the bus station and across to Leith Walk to the hostel where I’m staying.
I’m aware I’m in Blip central here - ten blippers I follow are in Scotland - most not far from here. I’m here to spend a couple of days with my friend F - who has just been at a get-together of Compassionate Friends - an organisation for people who have a child that died. We met at about 5 and spent the evening eating and talking.
Main blip - two rows of Colonies housing - they all have 15 houses in a terrace. Such a pleasant feeling about them.
Next - walking through New Town - and then along the Water of Leith walkway.
Second extra at the Botanics - I loved the apple area, especially the step over trees which I had heard of but not seen before. Also a corner with gorgeous colours together I thought, one type of apple blossom, called ‘Scotch Dumpling’ :-) and especially for blipper JeanSnaps proof that they are deliberately growing dandelions in the Physic garden at the Botanics!
