Day at the seaside
What a glorious day of sand, sea, trains and fun! We caught the train to Viareggio, it’s near Pisa and where the Italians go to the beach. 2 hours on the train, slightly regretting dashing for the train and not buying train snacks. Once we arrived we had no time to waste so caught a taxi to the beach which has a huge prom filled with restaurants. We were well overdue a meal by this point so had slap up plates of seafood, chips and white wine. The lady took against us in multiple ways which just made us laugh. First she didn’t bother to put our starters orders through. She sort of apologised and then after we couldn’t finish our main courses asked if we thought she was right not to let us have starters! Getting any type of salt, pepper or mayonnaise took multiple requests, she did NOT like us! Silly woman. Then we secured sun loungers on the beach and, watched on by the Italians in the coats, I went for a very glorious swim. The sea was a bit like Worthing in June, cool to get in and then bloody gorgeous.
All the time we were also tracking our friend Alison run the London marathon on the app, watching a little dot update on my phone has never made me cry before, it was all very emotional. She did a wonderful job and was very overcome with the whole wonder, running for her mum who she lost to Alzheimer’s.
Then a wander with all the promenading Italians and to a different beach bar (where they were ever so nice to us), back to the stazione, 8pm train home. A hugely excellent and good day out. A few extras.
