Here there and everywhere

Working On!

We obediently stayed in or very near to our flat today. It was quiet in El Dokki (our area) this morning and felt more like a Friday than Sunday, which is the first day of the working week here. Many places were closed. Just after lunchtime, we heard that it was ok to go out for a walk near the flat as the demonstrations wouldn't be starting properly till around 4pm or after dark. We had a bite to eat and a swim at the pool of a local hotel. Late afternoon, we could hear the traffic getting noisier and shouts of people and banging in the distance. On our way back home, there was a group of about 15 middle-aged, well-dressed people waving flags at the end of our street as it joined the square, either perhaps on their way to join the main crowds at Tahrir Square or near the Presidential Palace, but more likely just to show their support locally. We've since seen on the TV that the crowds on Tahrir and at the Palace are bigger than for the revolution two and a half years ago. They still seem peaceful, but the fear is that because Morsi's supporters and those against him are demonstrating just a mile from each other (near the Palace), there will be clashes later tonight. We're in the flat with BBC World on in the background, keeping an eye on what's happening.

This photo was taken from the bedroom this morning. For some, work has to go on as usual.
