One Street - On the Other Side

For most of its 41 mile length the tow path is on the northern bank. The exception is where the canal borders the land belonging to Norton Priory. Moving the tow path to the southern bank was one of the conditions that the then owner of Norton Priory, Richard Brook, insisted on.

This photo was taken from Stockton Lane which runs alongside the canal at this point. Traffic can no longer get along the full length of Stockton Lane. This restriction was put in place following an accident in 2004 when two young people were killed when the car they were traveling in failed to negotiate a sharp bend on the road and plunged into the canal. Two other young lads who were in the back of the car managed to escape.
