A Wild Day

It's been quite a day.
The storm began sometime in the night
Wind howling
like a locomotive
Things crashing and banging
in the dark
The arrival of morning didn't help much
light seeping through a crack in the clouds.
John is bored, pacing, wanting to cut his fava beans
Spike is uneasy,
and won't go outside.
A furled and tied umbrella in a heavy stand
blew over, shredded and  sodden.
Miraculously, no trees have fallen.
A pale watery sun came out
for a moment.
But it never stopped raining.
Now darkness is falling again.
The power just went out and along with it
the heat.
But the gas fire is working .
Generators have kicked in all around us
louder than the wind.
Our solar battery quietly came to the rescue.
We have water, light, a cozy fireplace
and bed.
