Tuesday night at the awards ceremony
After picking Frieda up from preschool and spending a happy hour or so playing with dinosaurs with her, I went off to the Sheffield Design Awards evening at the Site Gallery. These awards are managed by Sheffield Civic Trust; they recognise public art, and also innovative architectural design.
This evening was particularly for the 'Keith Hayman awards for public art': sculpture and murals. I'm delighted to say that the new Covid Memorial in the city centre won the sculpture award, a graceful and poignant piece of work that I blipped earlier in the year. There's an example here: https://www.blipfoto.com/entry/3139601343430264779
Most of my shots were of carefully-posed, smiling people, holding their certificates the right way around. But the mural winner - Peachzz - blew all that convention away and just expressed her delight in the whole process. The images of her are my favourites, though she moved so quickly that I really had to be on the ball to capture any.
Peachzz's winning mural currently brings smiles to the faces of passers-by in the city centre. You can see more of her and her work here:
