Sao Martinho

For the Festa of Sao Martinho, in Madeira they say that the summer is over and they should be ready for cold weather (15 degrees).

The church is decorated, inside and out, and my blip is of some of the schoolchildren we encountered when we went up to see what was going on.

Lots of food and drink was being prepared and in this part of Funchal, it will last for three days. Great fun and so friendly.

It was good to explore a different part of the city where they don’t all speak English. We may head back for some of the lively celebrations.

Yesterday afternoon, I met up with a Madeiran friend and while we were having a drink near the port, we came across the Fleet in Funchal celebrations. Three Fred Olsen cruise ships were there, and there was much spraying, sounding of greetings, and later fireworks. It was a splendid event on a glorious evening. Extras
