Australian Magpie

While there are some similarities in appearance, the Australian magpie is basically unrelated to the British species. They are highly intelligent and research suggests that they can recognize up to a hundred different human faces, use tools to secure food and have complex rules by which  groups define foraging territory, which they aggressively defend against outsiders.

There's a family of Magpies that has filed a claim on my back garden. They have satisfied themselves that I am reliably harmless and readily fossick about for worms and bugs, almost directly beneath me while I work. They also don't seem to mind posing.
