A Glimpse of Tiles
This day in Sydney began as completely cloudless and unambiguously pleasant. I hadn't actually wandered around the opera house in several years. For much of that time, of course, all five principal performance theatres were closed due to COVID. In any event, today I went looking for unusual (originalistic at least) views of the building.
There are 1,056,000 tiles on the opera house shells. Over the space of any five year period, ALL of them are systematically checked by teams of abseilers with rubber hammers. So far, some 40 tiles have actually become loose or cracked
Presently the great Concert Hall and many of the public areas are undergoing an $86 million dollar refit/upgrade/restoration. After all, the building is now more than 50 years old.
