Not Portobello Beach
The light at the end of the tunnel ... is the subject of yesterday's blip but this time seen from the amazing Gornegrat cog railway that climbs to the terminus at over 10000 ft (3089 m). As you can see the weather was amazing and ideal for walking down from the snow line. It was also a perfect day for seeing 29 4000m mountains. The amount of snow this year is unprecedented and we had to come two stations down to be able to walk safely. We had not expected winter walking conditions in June! The alpine flowers were stunning. The marmots were alarming. The "ski taxi" hang gliders heart stopping as they ran down the snow field with their 'trying not to look terrified' passenger, perhaps wishing they had stopped off in the tiny chapel, at the summit station before taking to the sky like human eagles. At every turn there was a different view of the mighty Matterhorn. Our thirty minute ascent by train took us over three hours of serious walking to get back to the hotel. Today has been one of the most amazing days we have ever experienced in the High Alps and Pyrenees mountains.
