SA Day Eight
Yes, we both had ostrich for dinner last night, and it was delicious! But the fillet was about the size of a hedgehog - perfect for one of the SA rugby players, but we struggled, and despite healthy appetites, couldn’t finish.
JR went to the gym this morning! I made a coffee and sat out on my porch, and watched the staff getting organised. They are happy in their job, and happy to pose for me.
Today we booked a driver for a tour, at the suggestion of the hotel. We forgot that any map of SA is not as it seems - it’s MILES bigger! The town that she suggested we visit, took us hours to get there, but boy! The scenery on the way was spectacular. In fact, I’d say the destination wasn’t worth going to, but the journey there definitely was.
First we went to an ostrich safari park. What a hoot that was! The whole trailer load (we were attached to a tractor) of people were hysterical when the great lumbering birds rushed to meet us. We all had a tub of food. They have no manners - they stab away in the tub, scattering the pellets far and wide, but presumably actually eat some. (Ostrich extras)
We learned lots of interesting facts about ostriches - this one springs to mind: their eyes weigh more than their brain.
Then we drove north and passed through a narrow winding gorge with THE most amazing rock formations. We stopped there to visit the Meiringspoort Waterfall. It was quite a hike up to it, but there was a nice sturdy metal fence to help me up.
And it was SO worth it! The waterfall was a lovely, long narrow stream, falling from a great height into a crystal clear pool. (Spot JR bottom left - I didn’t go up the last bit).
Our destination, Prince Albert, was a one-horse town - we fondly thought we might have lunch there, but couldn’t find anywhere suitable - but we had some delicious nougat.
Back to the hotel in time for the rugby and a room service snack. What fun we’re having!!
