Red Deer

We went on an organised trip with the Vercorin tourist office to see/hear the Red Deer rutting and, although we saw deer, they weren’t rutting. It was wonderful to see them though.

First thing this morning we went to Barboleuse t9 watc( the ‘Desalpe’ which is why the cows start to move down to lower pastures for the winter. It is quite a big event and we also in the parade were husky dogs, St Bernard dogs (see extra), old tractors, flag throwers p, horn blowers etc. A proper Swiss event.

After lunch, set off towards lunchtime in the campervan, with our son, and parked at Chalais, took the cable car up to Vercorin and met our guide. After a ten minute drive, we started a walk along a flat bisse (water irrigation channel) to a buvettte where we based ourselves. It was great to watch the deer through excellent monoculars on a tripod. P and I were able to climb a bit higher through the trees to get a closer luck. Once it had gone dark, we had a delicious fondue sat outside the buvette before retracing our steps using head torches. A great evening. Camping in the van at the bottom of the lift ready for a hike tomorrow.
