Sally Mair - Loving life

By Sallymair

Sunday sagas

Up this morning to church for the first time in ages I think my cough is finally firmly in retreat. I was greeted with the sad news that one of our congregation had a heart attack last week and although she survived for a couple more days, died yesterday. She knew she was not going to live for long, so at least was able to say her goodbyes. A shock for the rest of us though.
After church I headed off to Newhailes to say hi to NadinePierce at the monthly market there. Having perused the stalls, bought some posh melts from said blipper and some french delicacies from another stall holder, I sat in the sun with a sandwich for my lunch . Newhailes was selling some produce from the gardens so I came home with a very healthy looking bunch of carrots and a string of onions to add to the goodies from our church garden of potatoes and shallots. I love strings of onions, they take me back to my youth when the French onion seller came round on his bike, his handlebars weighed down with strings of onions. That memory makes me feel an almost overwhelming urge to speak in a bad French accent and to listen to squeeze box music.!
Back home, I was finally without any agenda. Colin phoned to say he was just setting out and had had some tea with his mum. On hearing they'd had fish and chips, I developed an overwhelming desire to have some scampi and chips from the Fish Market at Newhaven. I couldn't order online so set out and joined an almost 30 minute long queue. They were jolly good.
My collage shows the market at NewHailes,... two cormorants on what we used to call Jo..y rock at Joppa - the sewer pipe came out there... And the views along Portobello beach which was pretty busy. There were sailing dinghies on the water as well as several swimmers The picture was for Colin to show his mum. They used to live in Portobello in the 50s and 60s before moving to Blackhall. She recognised it instantly when I sent it and it triggered lots of memories for them both.
Monday tomorrow. Have a good week everybody.
