W-I-D-E on Wednesday/Derelict Sunday
Bobsblips would like "A Colourful Scene" for today's Widwed challenge - well this is the best I could do today, with a moderate amount of green and blue.
We went with Son#2 up the northeast coast to Craster and walked along the clifftop path to the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle (so I can also tag this for Marlieske's Derelict Sunday challenge this week).
The Castle is currently in the care of English Heritage, from whose website I quote the following history: "Dunstanburgh Castle was built in the second decade of the 14th century by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, the wealthiest nobleman in England. Earl Thomas was later executed for his role in the barons’ rebellion against Edward II, but the castle was extensively modernised in the 1380s under John of Gaunt. It played a role as a Lancastrian stronghold in the Wars of the Roses, but fell into disrepair at the end of the Middle Ages, and its ever more ruinous silhouette inspired many artists, including JMW Turner."
Since we last visited several years ago, the spiral staircase in one of the old towers has been made safe so visitors are now allowed to climb to the top of that tower...which (of course) we did!
The castle has featured before in my blips, always photographed from the north (today's photo is from the south), and in varying weather conditions: here, here and here.
