Bluemlisalp glacier

Taken from the side of the Bluemlisalp hut (2800m) where we are spending the night in a very full dormitory. You can see the lines of melt water caused as the glacier melts and water flows downhill. It makes a lovely pattern.

We set off from last night’s hotel in Grisalp in the cloud which we were very thankful for as it was 1500m of ascent today. It was great to have cool temperatures, perfect for hiking. We had a coffee at another small hut part way then carried on up. As we came to the ladder section, see extra, the sun started to peep through and reveal the amazing view above the clouds.

The hut is very popular with climbers who want to go into the glacier or climb the peaks above it. We arrived early enough to enjoy cake and tea then walk over to the glacier before dinner. For the meal, we were sat at a table with 3 Germans and 4 French so it was an interesting conversation, all in English. The high huts are always busy at this time of year as there is only a small window of opportunity from when the snow melts completely and the fresh snow returns. Sunset was beautiful.

Tomorrow is our last day with a steep descent. We won’t get up with the climbers though who will be having breakfast at 3am!
