Hórreo

We kept seeing these stone structures in Northern Portugal and also in north west Spain, in the gardens of houses. The first ones we saw had stone crosses on them and we thought they were some sort of elaborate sarcophagus for storing your deceased relatives in the garden.
Further investigation reveals that they are grain stores. They have little doors on the side and slats in the stone for air presumably.
You can read all about them here
They are on stone stilts with flat round stones for the structure to sit on, presumably these keep the mice out.
We have decided to press on home because the weather has deteriorated and we have a slight mechanical problem with our van. So we’re now near Santander for the night . It’s been raining all day.
