Slip decoration

We’ve finally got some coloured slip (which is just liquid clay) at the pottery studio so after turning a couple of pieces, I did some slip decoration. The one in the main shot is just sponged on, but the extra is done using a transfer method, painting coloured slip onto a piece of newspaper and letting it dry, then painting plain slip onto the pot and pressing the newspaper onto it. It leaves a crackled layer of coloured slip behind when you pull the newspaper off. Interesting technique.

Annoyingly, having spent so long sponge painting the bowl on the outside when it was upside down like this, I then turned it the right way up and realised I’d completely forgotten about the inside! No time at the end of the class to do anything about it so I’ve wrapped it up well and will do it next week. Numpty!

This morning I popped out to B&Q, hoping to get out and back before the local fun run and road race got going. But I got caught on the way home and was directed a very long way round - what should have taken 3 minutes took about 45! Very frustrating!
