Choisya (rutaceae)............
..............has at last decided to unfurl it's sweet, spicy petals this morning. When I Blipped the Hover Fly on Tuesday, the buds were closed up tightly but this morning, those buds have opened up.
When I awoke at 6.15am, I was greeted by brilliant sunshine with not a cloud in the sky. It is still sunny but there are quite a lot of clouds now at 12.30. p.m.
This variety is one called "Sundance" - also known as Mexican orange blossom - and is named "Sundance" because of the new leaves being bright yellow - though it tends to flower on last years growth which are more green. It may eventually reach a height and width of 8ft. Both the leaves and the flowers are strongly scented - I love the smell but some find it too heady. I think the thing I like best about this shrub is the fact that, even on the dullest day, it looks as if the sun is shining on it. It is hardy though this year some of the tips of the leaves turned a rather nasty brown colour - but we did have some very hard frosts and snow sat on it a long time.
The weather is much better than it was yesterday - temp. now 12 deg.C. but out of the sun it is still very chilly. I do hope it stays fine over the Bank Holiday - the forecast is not too bad for this area.
If it stays fine I shall go out into the garden and do a bit more tidying - what I am going to do about all the ground elder I don't quite know - I daren't use any sort of weed killer as all the plants and elder are intermingled! Maybe just get as much up as I can - the tiniest bit of root left just regrows.
Perhaps I shall have to put up with it - at least the leaves are not unattractive!!! Anyone got any tips?
Have a pleasant weekend and I hope the sun shines for you.
