Salts Mill
Well it is a building . . . but in a painting by Kitty North, a Yorkshire Dales artist who was commissioned to produce work in memory of the late Jonathan Silver, who had the vision of Salts Mill as a gallery, first and foremost for David Hockney.
You can see Salts Mill, Victoria Hall, the Congregational Church (my photo in extra), the river, the canal . . . and alpaca, which is the yarn that Titus introduced into the production of the high quality worsted for which Bradford was renowned.
I spent a few hours in Salts Mill today, a place I have always loved. Could you ask for a more inviting art shop than this (see second extra) and, as is well known, the bookshop is just the same - books laid out on tables just asking to be noticed.
It’s easy to take for granted that one is always surrounded by art work - the one I have blipped is in the cafe, I took the photo whilst eating delicious pancakes with maple syrup (they do excellent coffee too). The whole place is a David Hockney gallery - spacious and light and one is always aware of the history of the place - almost hearing the machines in action or lots of footsteps on the stone stairs.
