Mills, Pizzas and Pasta

I have been here many times in the past - with our own children and with many a school party. There are huge spinning and weaving machines and now a transport section (Jowett vehicles). It was good to be back and, as a plus, I had an interesting conversation with a group of the knowledgable volunteers who solved something I have been puzzling over for a long time - more anon.

We also sought out Sunny Bank Mills, Farsley, just because it is the current venue for the Great British Sewing Bee. We were going to visit Kirkstall Abbey, but the weather and time were against us. 

All very interesting but our main bit of nostalgia today was a visit to Salvo’s in Headingly. This wonderful Italian Restaurant was one of our favourite places when the children were young. A Christmas treat was to go to Leeds Playhouse where they always had an excellent family theatre production, then to one of the Grottos in the city centre and finally to Salvo’s to eat. Salvo opened the restaurant in 1976 and he was always around when we went several years later. He used to talk to the girls and say he was making pizzas especially for them. 

Now it is run by his two sons, one of whom came to talk to us and we reminisced about his father and he told us about how there was now a third generation in the kitchen. He was happy for me to take a photo (see first extra); his father is in the second extra, just as we remember him. 

And the food was just as good - the best pizzas and pasta ever. We have been in many Italian restaurants since, but hardly a one has matched Salvo’s.
