Flodden Wall
I attended a meeting this morning of the three congregations which are moving towards a union. We were thinking about what mission will mean/ look like for us in the coming years. It was a good positive discussion.
The meeting was held in the converted Kirk O’Field church, now known as the Charteris Centre. Kirk O’Field is a religious site dating back to the 13th century. When the Flodden Wall was built in the 16th century to protect Edinburgh it brought the site inside the city walls. The gate nearby became known as the Kirk O’Field Port or Potterow Port.
As the city expanded and the defence need diminished much of Flodden Wall was taken down. However some sections still remain such as this one just further down the Pleasance.
I don’t know if the artwork on the old police box in front of the wall is intended to scare away and intruders. It is probably as effective as the wall ever was.
