Playa Espadilia Sur
Our last full day in this extraordinary country. Our luxury, by comparison, hotel was on the edge of the Manuel Antonio national park, the first to be established in Costa Rica in 1972. It was really busy, and although unbelievably spectacular with pirates of the Caribbean scenery, sloths, squirrel monkeys and red, yellow and blue land crabs this was the first time we felt we were tourists. The blip is Playa Espadilla Sur just inside the park, inaccessible from the nearby village. There was no time for a dip, probably just as well since there are crocodiles in the tidal creek which unlike the caymans do infrequently get as far as the ocean.
A chance for a shower and change of clothing before we checked out of the hotel and a 150km drive to San José for our final night. Another change of climate, fleeces required for an evening in the city which sits at 800m. A farewell dinner, inexplicably in the Holiday Inn, nevertheless it was a jolly evening with our driver Fred celebrating his daughter’s 10th birthday virtually, the extra which includes Allan our exceptionally skilful and gracious local guide. And a sloth because we have seen quite a few of these along the way.
