Fenomenal
Which just about summarises today. We spent the morning walking through the tropical rainforest in the Parque Nacional Cahuita which includes a large coral reef 500m offshore. Progress was very slow as we stopped every few metres to look at something quite amazing. Our local guide is exceptional and is as excited as we all are at each new sighting. The monkeys were ubiquitous, although not particularly easy to spot. The one in the blip is a white throated capuchin monkey, smaller than the howler monkeys and about the same size as a spider monkey, both of which we saw.
The rain which had been forecast was replaced by blue skies and the Caribbean really did look like something out of Coral Island. Some of us enjoyed a robust swim/dook in a fairly rough sea. The coastline is notorious for riptides and our spot was carefully selected with strict instructions not to go deeper than chest height. It was glorious.
Another late lunch followed, plaintain and beans with coffee, I can’t get enough of the coffee here, Costa Rica is the only country where it is illegal to produce anything less than 100% Arabica coffee beans.
A swim in the safety of the hotel pool and a short walk to look for hummingbirds. Impossible to photograph, mesmerising to watch. I also spotted a Crimson Collared Tanager, and a family of woodpeckers.
The extra is a Coati, a member of the Racoon family, strolling along the shore.
