Saving Rosemary
More rain today, as is expected all week. Still, I find myself drawn out to my garden every time I glance through the window. Even in the drizzle, perhaps especially so, the Spring hues are incredibly vibrant. I know the display of color will be short-lived and want to drink in as much as possible. I wish I could do a better job capturing the beauty.
When I ventured out this afternoon, I noticed my son's Rosemary was in need of some TLC. He asked us to get him this after taking a cooking class where he learned to flavor with fresh herbs. And while we do make frequent use of clippings, somehow in recent weeks the little plant has suffered. So I decided to re-pot it today and trim off the yellowed needles - to cheer Rosemary up a bit :)
As I was working, the classic 60's song from Simon & Garfunkel, Scarborough Fair kept running through my mind. I love the sweet harmony:
Are you goin' to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Remember me to one who lives there,
she once was a true love of mine.
Did you know these lyrics stem from a medieval ballad of Yorkshire? Simon and Garfunkel wove them together with Canticle, an anti-war folk song to create the chart-topping song which was also featured on the soundtrack to the 1967 film, The Graduate.
So that's your music history lesson for the day. Maybe you like it better than German vocabulary or modern American Poetry? :)
