Why do hedgehogs leave one foot/leg extended when they hide?

Unbeknown to me this fella was hiding amongst the leaves of the hellebores when I accidentally disturbed him this morning. 
By the time I’d dashed inside to get a camera he’d moved and found another comfortable spot, for his head - leaving one lone foot extended. 

No photos taken yesterday so no blip - not even a back blip. I did however upload back blip #21 this morning so I’m slowly making progress. 

I do want to extend a huge thank you for the many lovely comments, stars and hearts for the vase of white peony blooms from the garden. The editing/textures were from Distressed Fx and Snapseed.
