Beauty in wood

As well as making the "must do" visit to Piazza San Marco today (and having tea and cakes at the Florian cafe whilst listening to lovely music from their orchestra), we travelled across the Grand Canal to Isla San Giorgio Maggiore. The church of San Giorgio Maggiore was stunning, but this area behind the altar fascinated me. The wooden choir-stalls, illustrating the life of St. Benedict were carved by the Flemish artist Alberto van den Brulle, and dated 1595. Benedictine monks from the monastery which has been established on this little island for centuries look after the church. Beautiful.
