Kilchoman

A fairly breezy day, mostly sunny, with a shower sweeping over in the afternoon.  A beautiful sunny evening, and winds calming.

Up early, and headed to Islay Airport to report to duty.  The airport is small, and just one flight in this morning.  I helped on the check-in desk, then boarded the flight too.  I had a few hours to myself in the late morning and afternoon, before returning for the last flight of the day, same duties.  A fine time exploring the north west of the isle, and just like home, no sat nav needed, and feels like I know everyone, every car waves, even more than Shetland.  A great walk around Port Charlotte, and a stunning beach walk at Machir.  A Chinese takeaway for tea, another walk, and now a quiet night in the B&B.

I went on a mission to hunt for an old Thomas Telford kirk, and it's 14th century cross.  The kirk was built on the site of an old medieval chapel, in 1827 but abandoned by the 1970s, due to depopulation.  Sadly with the poor state of the building now, the whole site condemned, and I couldn't get into the kirk yard to see the cross.  I headed up a near by hill instead.  Reading up about the area, there's loads of archeology, standing stones, old settlements and even a broch somewhere.  This is definitely a place for me to return on another trip.  Looking down to the kirk, manse and houses at Kilchoman, Islay.
