HIC IACET NOBILIS ARMIGER GILBERTUS DE GR?
Graveslab of Gilbert de Greenlaw in Kinkell Kirk, Aberdeenshire. He died at the Battle of Harlaw on 24 July 1411, when Donald, Lord of the Isles, asserting authority over the Earldom of Ross in his usual way of invasion and battle, approached Aberdeen with about 10,000 men. Local lairds under the Earl of Mar faced him on a hillside near Inverurie, with 2,000. Both sides claimed victory - but it was Donald who retreated with 900 dead, while Mar had lost only 500. The carving is notable for its detail of a gentleman's armour of the time. The River Urie 'ran red with blood', it is said. We can see the site of the battle from our sitting room window and delight to tell the tale, with full gory details and a Scots ballad, to visitors!
