Grabbing a moment while gardening

Plan for the week - to photograph the same flowers, or perhaps just one of them, and get front to back in focus by focus stacking or magic. Never tried it before, and haven't yet got the software- can't afford Photoshop, but need software that will go with Aperture on my iMac. Am I hopelessly adventurous for a beginner?
