White Rock - Tuesday Evening

We came for dinner,
then walked the pier...decided
to stay for ice cream!

A and I didn't want to waste our last evening, especially in good weather. We drove to White Rock, a seaside town along the US border. I have fond memories of summer evenings on the beach and snacking on chips fresh from the fryer after scrambling over the train tracks. The place has changed dramatically over the years since my childhood.

We found a parking space along the promenade close to the best restaurants. We managed to find a table for two facing the bay. Our rather expensive salad plates were delicious. We walked back across the promenade to the pier which extends into Semiahmoo Bay.

White Rock is named for the large white boulder found along the beach which was left by glaciation in the distant past. Today, the boulder is kept white with regular applications of paint.

The White Rock Pier is a major attraction. It is billed as the longest pier in all of Canada at some 1540 feet in length. In December 2018, it was severely damaged in a storm. It has since been repaired and reopened to the public. The pier continues to be important in daily use and activity.

We enjoyed our stroll down the pier along with many other people out for the evening. We watched a paddleboarder maneuver around the pier. A saltwater duck I could not identify bobbed and dived along the edge. At the end of the pier a small crowd had gathered to watch a whale surface and spout. I couldn't get close enough for a photo. Crabbers at the end of the dock were throwing their traps out onto the water and retrieving them. A look back to the shore caught so many condo developments facing south.

We walked back to the promenade in search of ice cream. A chose guava raspberry and I had sour cherry amaretto. Delicious!

I left a quilted heart on the railings near the Archives and Museum building by the promenade. (Earlier I'd left one by the Fort Langley Public Library.)

We'll be on our way home in the morning (Wednesday). I didn't think I needed a replay of Sunday's photos on the return trip, so I have put my Tuesday evening collage up instead. We'll be home Wednesday evening.
