Thompson Rivers University began its life as a regional college, opening in 1970 to accommodate the baby boomers. In 2005, TRU was incorporated as a university. It operates as a public post-secondary institution funded by the province of British Columbia. It serves academic and trades students. TRU offers 140 on-campus programmes and about 60 distance or online programmes. In 2011, TRU Faculty of Law became the first new Canadian law school to be opened in over 30 years.

The university takes its name from the two rivers it overlooks, the North Thompson and the South Thompson. Its main campus in Kamloops has 250 acres. In terms of sustainability, TRU is Canada's first platinum rated university. Solar water heating, campus-wide composting and a carpool service are some of the efforts made in this area. TRU has 40 acres of gardens and the largest arboretum in the interior of the province.

In 2013, TRU began its master plan setting the future of the Kamloops campus as a “village model”. The goal is to develop 90 acres with retail space, office space and residential units. This is intended to provide a revenue stream to support scholarships, bursaries and research.
So, today we see construction in progress.

Both my kids attended here. I have my favourite locations on campus myself. I love the Horticultural Gardens and the campus radio station. The gardens can be enjoyed and appreciated in any season. I walked through them this morning admiring the iris blooming. The radio station (CFBX 92.5 FM) can be picked up on the fm band within the city and enjoyed online as well. (www.theX.ca) It is manned by a dedicated group of volunteers. A wide variety of music is available.
