Sedbergh Railway Bridge

I checked in with Yoss, this morning, to see whether there would be a class today but the number of people who'd cried off meant it was cancelled. What an oddly unengaged bunch they are. Anyway, that left me with a day to myself as Izzy had gone off to a friend's wedding, and Abi was revising for her imminent 'A' levels.

For a while I have been meaning to go and investigate the old railway bridge that crosses the Rawthey, to the south-west of Sedbergh. This carried the line between the stations at Middleton and Sedbergh. So, today - an unexpected free day to myself - was a perfect opportunity.

I parked up on a road bridge crossing over the old line just along the lane from Holme Farm Campsite, made my way down onto the former railway, and then walked north. I always find it oddly moving walking along the paths of old railways, as they cut through the countryside. It's funny, as one walks along, to think that what you're seeing ahead of you is the view that the driver would have had from his cab.

Eventually, I approached the bridge, which is now the property of British Gas, and very securely fenced off. I took a photo through the fence, which is my Extra.

After that, I made way down from the track to the river's edge, from where I took my main photo. The manicured grass of Sedbergh Golf Club extends up to the bridge, so it felt slightly surreal to scramble down from the forgotten rail route into civilisation. None of the golfers was paying the bridge much attention. I guess it's just part of the scenery.
