Mam Tor 'the Shivering Mountain'

Bitter cold, misty and damp. With reference to the wet weather activity list we chose to go underground down the Blue John Cavern at Castleton. Blue John is a semi precious mineral (type of fluorspar) found only in Castleton. It is made into all sorts of jewellery and trinkets some cheap and others v. expensive. On emerging from the Cavern the mist had cleared (a bit) so we ventured to look at the old A625 road that passed under Mam Tor. Back in 1974 there was a massive land slip that finally took away the road. Mam Tor geology is layer upon layer of shales and the action of wind, rain and ice cause it to shed great lumps of rock and landslip hence the name 'Shivering Mountain'. The image shows Mrs Wild on the old road and the layers and layers of tarmac of the old road that make up man made geological formation. The shape of Mam Tor can be just seen in the gloom.
