Monsal Trail

Day 3 looked promising so we took the Bikes to the old Millers Dale Stn to cycle the Monsal Trail to Bakewell and back. The full trail is 8.5 miles along the old Manchester to Derby to London Midland Railway line. It was closed to rail traffic in 1968 and became an adhoc walking route along the Wye Valley. The line came into the hands of the national park authority in the early 80's and was designated the Monsal Trail and improved for walkers and cyclists. There are several long tunnels along the route and until 2009 these where closed to walkers and cyclists meaning diversions over and round the tunnels. These are now open and lit and provide a continuous route. We pottered along at a casual pace taking in the spectacular views of the River Wye and gorge ending up at Bakewell. We went into Bakewell to buy the obligitary Bakewell Tart, it was also market day. Great to see a traditional thriving town market. On our way back ( wind behind us) we stopped off at the old Hassop Stn for tea and cake. On our return to Millers Dale Mrs Wild and N0 2 son Ciaran took the car back to our digs while me and Cal cycled backed. Chicken and rice for tea then beer and board games beside a roaring log fire.
