Figuring Out A Figurehead
Today stared with a gloriously sparklingly Spring morning again, very cold and with frost on the ground but me and my brother still ventured out for a run down to our local village and back. It really got the endorphins flowing!
Before we had to complete our weekly Sunday food shop we thought another micro trip was in order so we headed back to Chatham Dockyard. As we already have yearly passes we didn't have to pay again. The temperature had climbed, the sun was out and it was great to be walking through the grounds surrounded by all that history.
Today's image is a close up the figurehead of HMS Wellesley (with added cupola and lantern) - a 3rd rate 74 gun ship launched in 24th February 1815 at Bombay (modern day Mumbai) Dockyard. It was named after Marquess Wellesley, Governor General of India and brother of the Duke of Wellington.
The extra shows the figurehead in full where it is situated outside St George's Chapel in the dockyard grounds, whose foundation stone was laid on 19th December 1906 and remains a naval memorial centre with windows and memorials dedicated to naval personnel.
A thoroughly enjoyable micro trip and then it was on to the food shop - but we still had time to fit a pint in on the way home.
