Lucca and Ancient Rome

In 56 BC, three powerful Roman Generals - Cesare, Pompey and Crassus - met in Lucca to form the First Roman Triumverate. At that time each general controlled different parts of the Roman World and Lucca was on the border of two of those areas. Remnants of Ancient Rome are visible in Lucca today, having survived over 2000 years! The main photo shows the two remaining arches of the Roman theatre, which originally was two stories and round like the coloseum. As with most ruins, a church was built on top, incorporating the ruin as part of its structure. That was the case with part of the Roman wall. In extra photo, you can see a remaining section of the Roman Wall, beyond the tree is Chiesa di Santa Maria della Rosa. Another part of the Roman wall 100 feet further down forms part of the wall inside that church (extra photo). And just down the block, remains one column from the Roman Forum. It is now in a small piazza, that also serves as an outdoor dining area and parking lot. The glamour is gone.
