Tail End of Summer
My Dear Princess and Dear Friends,
I had another very quiet day today. Mostly I worked.
But toward the end of the day, just as we were watching "The Dropout" something unusual happened.
A teeny-tiny little hedgehog puttered across our deck.
"Tiny hedgehog!" said I. Because I'm observant like that.
This concerned me. Because I'm aware that if hedgehogs are TOO little when they hibernate they might not come back out of hibernation again.
And we know that most of our local hedgehogs have started to hibernate. We know this because the hours between 8pm and midnight used to be like Hedgehog Picadilly Circus around here.
But now it's like Hedgehog Scunthorpe City Centre after 3am.
So we had a quick debate:
SHOULD WE BRING TEENY-TINY HEDGEHOG INSIDE?
I DON'T KNOW.
CAN YOU CATCH IT?
I DON'T KNOW.
IF YOU CATCH IT I WILL GET A BOX.
WE NEED NEWSPAPER. ALSO CAT FOOD.
I WILL GET THE NEWSPAPER. AND CAT FOOD.
ARE YOU SURE?
THE SUPERMARKET STAYS OPEN UNTIL 10PM.
I WILL CATCH THE HEDGEHOG.
I WILL GET THE CAT FOOD. AND NEWSPAPERS.
So Caro caught the hedgehog. And she put her* in a box. I went to the supermarket and now the hedgehog has plenty of food and reading material.
She is puttering about inside her box in the kitchen. We can hear her eating cat biscuits and scruffling around making a nest in there.
We are still not sure we are doing the right thing.
But. Tiny hedgehog.
S.
* I have decided she is a girl. Because she is so cute.
