Soulless

Some Background.
Falmouth v Penryn Rugby, always a good fixture with a good crowd and the rivalry is intense. This year Penryn have their 150th anniversary, Falmouth's is next season. Penryn, when they visit Falmouth never enter the clubhouse for post match food or a beer and that about sums up Penryn Rugby Club, in fact Penryn as a town. A chip on its shoulder caused by believing that they live in the shadow of their neighbour, it extends throughout the ‘borough’ as Penryn likes to be known.

On to today, current league form suggested that Falmouth were in for a drubbing and Penryn clearly believed their own publicity but it was not to be. In front of what looked a smaller crowd than usual Falmouth fielding a back line comprised almost entirely of newly promoted ‘Colts’ , (the old timer on the wing was 21), they are building for the future, they played the rugby and dominated the last quarter, had they taken their kicks they would have won, their cause wasn’t helped by some dismal refereeing. Penryn stuck to what they are best at, constant complaining to the referee, off the ball niggles and taking advantage of poor refereeing.
The match finished with Falmouth feeling points lost, Penryn still moaning.

Into the clubhouse for one beer to listen to, “do you know we are the oldest club in Cornwall”, “or “do you know we played the Lions”. We left and made our way back to the Falmouth clubhouse, not anywhere near the memorabilia on display, more expensive beer, but definitely more friendly.
