School Day
First Of April - I managed to survive the ‘All Fools” jokes although I particularly liked the plan to extend and widen the River Tamar to a Panama Canal type shipping route to shorten the container ship journey to Bristol.
The first part of the day was taken up with preparing for and attending my friend Tony’s funeral in Truro. Quite a moving ceremony, funny in parts as well. He entered the chapel to Hearts Of Oak and we enjoyed the theme from Last Of Summer Wine as well.
In the evening it was a Daughter & Dad Day, meal out and then on to the Falmouth Polytechnic for an hour or so with Giles Whittell. He is an author and journalist who has worked for The Times as Correspondent in Russia and the United States. His books include Lambada Country (1992), Extreme Continental (1994), Spitfire Women of World War II (2007) and Bridge of Spies, a New York Times bestselling account of the Cold War spy swap. He was in Falmouth to talk about his latest book, The Greatest Raid which is a retelling of the story of Operation Chariot, the raid on St Nazaire - The Greatest Raid. I enjoyed the opportunity to speak to him and the two of us are shown in todays photo.
A couple of beers and some chips for the walk home rounded of an enjoyable evening.
