Crepe myrtle

The crepe myrtles were in full flower when we stopped for coffee in the southern NSW town of Holbrook this morning. In the main photo, the background building is the Knox Uniting Church. It was opened in 1901 as a Presbyterian Church. Just opposite (extra) is the Riverina Hotel, also with crepe myrtle in the foreground. It was built in 1900.

The area was originally inhabited by the Wiradjuri people. Colonial settlement began in the 1830s and a small town on the site was called Ten Mile Creek. By the 1870s it had been renamed Germanton, after a publican of German origin. During World War I that name was felt to be unpatriotic and was changed to Holbrook.
