Back again

This barge was the one that was trying to turn in the Fossdyke yesterday and couldn’t. We watched it heading west towards Torksey where the canal joins the river Trent. It may of needed  to travel the 5 miles there to turn round, before coming back to Saxilby. It is now tied up pointing east towards Lincoln. 

I realised yesterday that I’ve never document any of the history of this waterway. It was built in around 120 AD by the Romans and is thought to be the oldest canal in England still in use. It’s only 11 miles long.

We normally walk home via the village, but today we wandered out of the village along the canal west bound and were most surprised to see so many middle aged men fishing. The weather had been dreadful overnight and throughout the morning, but had dried up by late afternoon. The men were in in groups of two up to eight. Safety in numbers as the banks are steep and uneven. I felt uncomfortable just watching them scrabbling about. 

R & S called in for coffee and cake on the way back from Lincoln. Good to catch up on their news and hear about their plans for a busy week ahead.
