Kitzsteinhorn
Went to Kaprun, 30 mins by bus from Zell am See today, where the lifts take you up to 3029 meters and there is a glacier in the corrie. Snow conditions were nice after all the snow, with avalanche risk 3 on the EAWS (European Avalanche Warning Services) scale, level 3 is "considerable", so no off piste skiing for me, though we did see what looked like a guided group who had inflatable Ortovox avalanche rucksacks (or "Avabags") head down off-piste from the top lift in beautiful powder. It was cloudy though and visibility was poor, which made hitting powder somewhat of an off-putting surprise.B insisted in skiing "Black Mamba", a black run that is listed as having a 63% gradient (which is not as steep as it sounds, if I have converted correctly it's 32 degrees --- Flypaper in Glencoe is 45 degrees).
I felt I had to blip at least one photo with a skier in it and today is a concession to that sense of duty, though I prefer the extras: one taken from the top viewpoint on Kitzsteinhorn at 3029 metres and the other near sunset on the the descent, much lower down.
