The French Dispatch
We have had a quiet day but treated ourselves to a visit to the cinema; the first time for nearly two years. Winchester's Everyman cinema is housed in the old military chapel and has two screens and small, but uncrowded, auditoriums. Behind it, you can see the spire of the old St Thomas's church (no longer consecrated).
The film we went to see? Wes Anderson's latest production,"The French Dispatch". If you enjoyed his earlier film "The Grand Budapest Hotel" you are likely to be entertained by this movie. We loved both, but there are so many nuances in this film that a second viewing is required to get all the jokes. It helps to have an understanding of the French language, as the action takes place in the fictional town of Ennui- sur- Blase, (Boredom on Apathy ) which has a cafe called Le Sans Blague (No Kidding!). It tells the stories of various journalists working for the outpost of a (fictional) American newspaper, in an often very surreal manner.
