The Cooperative Union
This morning we walked across to have a coffee at Mackie Mayor before meeting some neighbours for lunch at Jane Eyre. On the way, we passed this memorial:
"To diffuse a knowledge of the principles of co-operation by advice and instruction - literary, legal and commercial".
It was erected just over a century ago, although people have been kicking against Britain's lack of social mobility for longer than that. One might have thought democracy would destory the feudal state but not yet: bring on PR!
Which in a roundabout way brings me to our neighbours, who are about to move to Washington. They were clearly delighted to be getting away from Brexit and the Tories. I think most rational people would feel the same way.
Anyway, places like Jane Eyre, with its excellent Sunday roast, make being stuck here a little more tolerable.
