Stuff and Nonsense

Water Rail #97

Our last full day in Devon was another nice one, with the sun still shining until late afternoon.
After a late breakfast we went to the Wetlands again as it is only 15 minutes away. The Island hide was the best place once again with the usual greenshanks, redshanks, dunlin, lapwing and snipe. I was really hoping for the Little Stint or the green sandpiper again, but it was not to be. However, we did see this very shy Water Rail skulking about in the far reedbed. It is heavily cropped, but still recognisable I think, and I liked the reflection. I have put some redshank in extras as I liked the reflections they gave in the super still water.
In the afternoon we went to the Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth. On site, they have over 200 donkeys and offsite support over 7000 donkeys around Europe. It was an interesting visit and great to see the different types of donkeys - there's a nice one in extras too.
If the sun is shining tomorrow we might pop back to the wetlands again for one last look before we head home - maybe the Little Stint or Green Sandpiper will want to come and say goodbye to us :)
