Room For One More On Top

We spent the day at Picton Castle, a Historic Houses' property just a few miles away near Haverfordwest.

The castle itself (see extra) dates back about 700 years although it has been renovated and added to o er the years so it is now more of a stately home. The tour of some of the castle's rooms was very entertaining and we enjoyed wandering through the gardens and woodlands, which were dappled in Autumn sunlight.

It is also home to the Welsh Owl Sanctuary and a small collection of other birds of prey and small mammals and reptiles. These tortoises and iguana appear to have developed a daredevil balancing act to wile away the long hours and days, the climax coming when the tortoise made a (slow) dash for the water bowl.

There was also an impressive display from a falconer who flew a falcon, an Eagle Owl and a fish eagle as well as a virtually flightless bird from the Falklands, the striated caracara, which I'd not heard of before. It all made for a good day out.
