Butt o Lewis Lighthouse

Showers first thing, and remained overcast all day.

With a poor morning, we did some grocery shopping this morning in Stornoway.  We finally headed out, and headed north, both NW and NE coasts.  We had lunch in a lovely café at Ness, and a walk around the harbour.  So far, Lewis looks even more like Shetland than Skye.  I read the population has sadly dropped over the years, now Shetland will be the largest population in the Scottish Isles.  Sad news arrived, my old primary headmaster, Wilbert Gray, passed away.  After meeting Burra man, John-Willum, in Uig, Skye, today there are two Shetlanders, Tom Nicolson and wife, at our campsite, Stornoway.

As far north as we got today, was at the lighthouse.  A lovely old building, with an unusual brick tower.  It was designed by David Stevenson, and built in 1862.  The towers stands 37 meters high, with 168 steps to the top.  It housed three keepers, with their families.  It had a radio link to the Flannan Island lighthouse, which has a sad story.  The light was automated in 1998, and also it claimed the windiest spot in the UK, according to the Guinness World Records.  The Butt of Lewis Lighthouse Tower, Isle of Lewis.
